⚠️ stop putting fish in bowls 2k19!!! ⚠️
My brother was diagnosed with depression years before I was, and because of that he started therapy years before I did.
I still remember when I was a young teen and he was playing a Nirvana song and he stopped it at this one line: “I miss the comfort of being sad”
He told me that when you start to get better, there’s a part of you that misses being sad and that if you start feeling that way you have to be extra extra aware and careful because if you indulge the feeling you’ll go down a self-destructive spiral
And even though that was years and years ago, I think about it all the time. Especially when I’m reading discourse on the idea of getting so attached to mental illness as an identity that you don’t want to improve things because you feel safe in it and don’t know who you are without it
I always think of that line “I miss the comfort of being sad” and my brother’s warning
i want to eat marijuana with kevin the la beast
what’s stopping you
ate all my marijuana already
Alterhuman Survey
I’ve finally given up on improving it any more. It’s long, and maybe a little unorganized in places, and for that I apologize. But after a couple of rounds of beta editing, and several months of blood, sweat, and tears, I have a survey at last.
Link
The survey is a bit long, but most people probably won’t need to fill out most of it because it has sections for different alterhuman communities, so many sections will be skipped. I apologize for not making the section-skips automatic, but I don’t trust the section-skip mechanic Google has to work properly, so you’re just going to have to scroll and manually skip sections as necessary, unfortunately.
I’m hoping to get as many responses as possible, aiming for as near to a census of the alterhuman communities as I can. With as much data as I can get, hopefully I can gain and present you all with some helpful, or at least interesting, insights into the demographics of the alterhuman communities. To that end, I ask:
Please share this survey with as many alterhuman spaces and groups as you can and spread it as far as possible so as much data can be collected as possible! You don’t need to ask me permission to repost it on other websites; please do!
I will be completing a statistical analysis at some point in the future. The current plan is to close the survey and do this analysis in June of 2019, but if it seems I’m still getting a significant number of new responses in at that point, or if it seems like traffic has slowed down before we reach that point, that date may change. I will update y’all if and when that happens.
Thank you all so much for your patience and support!

A-MA-ZING
Actual text from my sister when Katelyn debuted this “Holy shit. Katelyn Ohashi’s routine this year.”
College, and specifically UCLA, gymnastics seems like such a fun and encouraging place. I love how she’s genuinely smiling throughout the entire video and how her teammates are cheering her on and truly loving and supporting her throughout her routine. I hope we can get more of this in sports!
My favourite thing is the fact her team mates do parts of the routine with her. It’s so cute. And I love her
Check out these wood carved shoes that were made to look like cow hooves. They were used by moonshiners to cover up/hide their tracks during Prohibition.
me: okay time to jump into the action scene
me: don’t say it
me: don’t say it
me: don’t say it
me: don’t say it
me: don’t say it
me: don’t say it
me: don’t say it
me: don’t say it
me: … “SUDDENLY”
My go-to fixes for this:
- but before [Character] could [verb], ACTION!
- [Character] was about to [verb] when ACTION!
- but no sooner had [something] than ACTION!
- but just as [something boring], ACTION!
- BANG!/CRASH!/BOOM! ACTION!
- “Character dialogue starting some sentence about–” ACTION!
- Character’s internal monologue starting some sent– ACTION!
- Narrator starting some– ACTION!
- … ACTION!
Why extend your readers the courtesy of a ‘suddenly’ except to vary sentence structure?
One of my go-to fixes is
“Well, what could go wrong now?” [Character] said.
As if on cue, ACTION!
If you ever think a video game you’re playing is facetious, instead consider EarthBound:
- About three quarters through the game, the player finds a weapon called the Casey Bat. It is the strongest weapon in the game by a large margin, so naturally the player will equip it to Ness instantly. What isn’t indicated, though, is that it has a 75% miss rate. Players are often bewildered by the fact that at a certain point in the game, Ness suddenly becomes incapable of hitting anything.
- The player is at one point given the option to buy an egg. The egg does nothing. But it will randomly hatch into a chick without notifying the player. While a chick is in the player’s inventory, a beeping sound will play constantly. There is no indication of why this is happening.
- A boss called the Clumsy Robot has a move where it eats a bolonge sandwich. The text prompt will say that it recovers an enormous, demoralising amount of HP from doing this. It actually does nothing. The text prompt is lying.
- At one point the player is given the option to buy a machine from an inventor. They are told they need the machine to progress in the game. It is incredibly expensive. The machine isn’t needed for anything at all, and it breaks when you use it.
- To get into one of the villains’ lair, you have to know the secret password. The secret password is five minutes of silence. You have to stand in front of the door into the lair for five minutes without doing anything, then you will be allowed in.
Fuck your noise. EarthBound went hard.
